EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
